The Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town

The castle, more of a fortress really, harks back to the arrival of the first settlers, the Dutch. They built it to protect their business and logisitcal interests under the auspices of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). This is the oldest colonial building in the country. In plan it is pentagonal with stong ‘arrow head’ bastions protrusing from each corner from which it could be defended by cannon and marksmen.
